Topaz has a wide color range of white/clear, blue, green, orange, red, pink and purple.

Well known topaz colors are:  London Blue, which is a deep sky blue; Imperial, which is golden orange-yellow; Swiss Blue, which is sky blue; Mystic, which is synthetically colored with a multi-colored rainbow effect.

Birthstone by Month & Zodiac: Topaz is the birthstone for November, and the blue topaz is for December.

Topaz is associated with Aries and Sagittarius in the Zodiac.

Facts:  Topaz forms as large crystals.  Some of the largest gemstones cut have been topaz. The largest topaz discovered was in Brazil.  It was a transparent topaz weighing 596 pounds! The largest topaz producer is Brazil.

Blue topaz is the gem for 4th anniversary.

In 1768 The Royal Court of Portugal celebrated the discovery of the Imperial Topaz, also known as the “Precious Topaz”.  This is the gem for the 23rd anniversary.

Most topaz in the market are treated. Blue topaz rarely occurs in nature and is most always light in color.  It needs to be irradiated or heat treated to artificially create the blue color.  

Some finer topaz stones are radioactive.  All U.S. topaz are tested for radiation levels. The Gemological Institute of America provides radiation testing.
